“Finish the Look!”
The famous line said in the hit series Girls was about the complete application of makeup. No look is complete without the proper application of a foundation. Foundation is exactly what the name suggests. It is the base upon which your entire makeup regimen relies on.
Foundation is in fact an umbrella term that applies on a wide variety of products that can differ in shades, textures, and consistency. At the end of the day, all of these products function as a base for applying your actual makeup.
Because foundation can refer to a lot of different products and bases, it is necessary to set up some ground rules and follow them while you are thinking about applying your makeup for the day.
Rule No.1: One Shade
Whatever product you are applying to work as your base, it is important that you keep in mind that the shade you are using matches the skin tone you are applying on. There is nothing that could be worse than applying perfect makeup and having a line beneath the jaw that is an obvious tell. That would just make everything go into the cakey territory.
Even if you feel like you have got the right shade as your foundation, make sure that you blend it properly into your neck so there is no sudden line of separation between your makeup and your actual skin color. It will help make your look feel more natural.
Rule No.2: Seal It
So, you have applied your favourite foundation product and think that you are done before applying your makeup? Think again. Whatever product you apply, one of the most important rules to keep in mind for using foundation is that you have got to seal it in. Your skin produces oils as the day progresses and whatever product you use - concealer, bb cream, bronzer, tinted moisturiser – it is going to want to move. It is especially important to seal the foundation in if you are going to be moving around a lot; like going out for a night of dancing. In the old days women even used hairspray to lock it in but the best way to do it is with a no colour powder that doesn’t cake and has no pigmentation.
Rule No.3: Primer It
The use of primer wasn’t a thing outside of professional makeup. It has gotten more mainstream lately and rightfully so. Primers are really important in a sense that they act as a barrier between the makeup you apply and your skin. Even though beauty products today go through a lot of testing, it is always a great idea to separate your skin from anything containing pigmentation.
Rule No.4: Choosing the Correct Finish
Spending time to choose the correct finish; it is an important rule for using your foundation. Depending on your personal preference you might want a radiant finish or a natural finish. If you have oily skin then it is always a rule to not go for the radiant finish. That is because the products with ‘dewy’, ‘glowing’, and ‘luminous’ have light reflecting pigmentations. If you have oily skin that could have detract from your proper makeup. So go for products that have ‘natural’ or ‘matte’ in its name if you feel like you have got skin that gets oily real quick.
Rule No.5: Never Sleep in It
To round off, this is an essential rule for using foundation for the longevity of your skin and its health. While it may not directly cause it, any pigmentation that is left on your face may result in acne breaking out. Also, the skin can even become unhealthy and lose its natural vigour if the makeup and foundation is left on too long. It will not only help with improving the health of your skin, it will also help you sleep better. Which in turn is another way you can retain healthy skin.
So these are the 5 most important rules to keep in mind for using Foundation for every woman. There are other things to to keep in mind as well, like having tools handy to maintain the base and to alo know how different product formulas require different techniques. But the above mentioned 5 are completely essential.
